INTROSPECTION is an unusual tool in my studio.  In addition to paint and drawing media, my raw materials include contemplation and memories.  With an underlying influence of my fascination for Italy, and my infatuation with the lines and layered colors evident in places worn down by time, each painting begins with an observation or recollection.  Underwriting each painting is my whole hearted desire to create work that engages, by some alchemical means, my appreciation for life.

MY WORK begins with my choice of colors, impelled by intuitive marks, until at some point I fall in love with what comes to light.  For a brief period I bask in my own enthusiasm.  Almost always, though, there is a mysterious shift where the painting speaks to me in ambiguities and dissatisfaction sneaks in.  Certain passages that I am attached to have to be relinquished, as the painting teaches me to let go and move on.  I'm a traveler with signposts but no maps, and the signs are metaphors or dreams.

THIS SEQUENCE often takes weeks to evolve.  When I can finally encounter my painting with a sense of joy, I know the work is resolved.  Along my journey from observation to conclusion, I've learned to trust, just like life, guided by the inquisitive deep thinker within me.
